Sewing class

Perhaps our most unusual ministry, our sewing class has been meeting weekly for several years. It started with Doris Crofton's desire to help our kids (and adults) learn basic sewing skills that they would be able to use the rest of their lives.

Doris began scouring garage sales and collecting bargain sewing machines. At first her daughter, who makes custom drapes, came down from the Cities and helped. Many quilts and even a couple of sleeping bags have come from her material sample books! Other projects have included sweatsuits, Christmas angels, dolls, giant hamburger pillows, clothing, mittens, and a baby quilt for a big sister's baby.

When she assumed leadership of the class, Sandy Toogood strengthened the focus on teaching basic and not-so-basic skills. Now she, Penny Thomas, and Sandy Huikko share their sewing skills in this practical ministry. It's a fun time of working on projects together!

Disaster Relief Quilt Project

photo of class with quilt Our sewing class is creating a quilt to help with the September 11 Disaster Relief fund. They are "selling" quilt blocks for a contribution, which they will then stitch together into a quilit to go to one of the disaster relief organizations. Contributors' names will go on the quilt, and it will have an embroidered border. If you are interested in helping, contact Sandy Toogood. You can read more about it in the article "Patch by patch...," extracted from the Rochester Post-Bulletin.
